Tragedy struck this community last week when a popular teenager drowned in a swimming pool. Kane Young, a senior at Humboldt High School, lost his life after being pulled from the bottom of a swimming pool at a residence on Main Street. Young was projected to be one of the leaders on the Viking football team this fall, according to head coach Dan Bland. School board members closed out the 2009-10 school budget by approving necessary amendments to balance it at a recent meeting. Three of the five board members, Lenford Carr, Thomas Porter and Gerald Trimmer, attended the July 15 meeting. Board members Henry Lewis and Phillip Hardee were unable to attend. After reviewing last year’s budget, 11 line items went over budget totaling almost $100,000 in the red or approximately one-percent of the budget.
