Afternoon swim ends in death of Vike standout, community mourns teen

Tragedy struck this community last week when a popular teenager drowned in a swimming pool. Kane Young, a senior at Humboldt High School, lost his life after being pulled from the bottom of a swimming pool at a residence on Main Street. Young was projected to be one of the leaders on the Viking football team this fall, according to head coach Dan Bland. Bland said Young had worked his way into a leadership role. “He became a strong example of what a young Christian man should be,” Bland said. “I’ve watched him exhibit those qualities and seen him grow into a leader.” According to the Hum...

Two of the three candidates for Gibson County mayor took a stand on the wheel tax issue when they spoke to the Humboldt Rotary Club last week. While independent candidate Tim Luckey said the increase was a “good tax,” republican Mark Renfroe said “no tax was a good tax.” Democrat Tom Witherspoon did not address the issue. School board ponders budget overages

School board members closed out the 2009-10 school budget by approving necessary amendments to balance it at a recent meeting. Three of the five board members, Lenford Carr, Thomas Porter and Gerald Trimmer, attended the July 15 meeting. Board members Henry Lewis and Phillip Hardee were unable to attend. After reviewing last year’s budget, 11 line items went over budget totaling almost $100,000 in the red or approximately one-percent of the budget.
